154. The Tylenol Murders – Part 1

In late September 1982, seven people in the Chicago area died after taking Extra-Strength Tylenol capsules that had been deliberately contaminated with cyanide. The deaths triggered a massive multiagency investigation, a nationwide recall, and changes to product packaging that remain with us today.

In Part 1, we go over the timeline of the poisonings, examine how investigators discovered the connection between the deaths, and look at what they learned about where and how the Tylenol may have been contaminated. We also begin our discussion of possible motivation, including what the choice of Tylenol itself may tell us about the offender. Part 1 of 3.
